Nature Fresh Farms has contributed to a significant milestone in restoring the Hillman Marsh Conservation Area. In partnership with the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA), the company added 50 wetland plants to the beach area, marking the completion of the first phase of an extensive project to restore the Hillman Marsh barrier beach and enhance the ecosystem’s functionality.

“The wetland restoration works will help with wave dissipation effects,” explained Tim Byrne, ERCA Chief Administrative Officer. “Adding these native wetland plants will help stabilize the shoreline while improving the habitat of the wetland.”

So far, approximately 600 square metres of the area have been planted with various wetland species, including Cattail, Blue Flag Iris, Fox Sedge, and Joe Pye Reed. An additional two hectares are slated for further planting with wetland shrubs.

Nature Fresh Farms also donated $12,500 to help fund the purchase of plant materials. “Today, as we plant together, we’re contributing to a healthier, more resilient future for our community and the wildlife that depends on this marsh. We are pleased to be supporting this initiative as it aligns with our commitment to Growing for a Kinder Future,” said Matt Quiring, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Nature Fresh Farms.

The Hillman Marsh Restoration Project is designed to create a high-crested barrier that will protect the marsh and support habitat restoration and vegetation growth in and around the barrier. The effort aims to increase the marsh’s resilience to wave action, storm events, erosion, and the impacts of climate change.
