This month featured two WECSSAA victories and many impressive seasons.
Track and Field
For the 14th year in a row, the Sandwich Sabres are your WECSSAA champions. Along the way, the Sabres broke four longstanding records, and earned 19 first-place, 18 second-place, and 19 third-place finishes.
Outstanding athletes include Ella Steel-Douglas and Jaela Bailey, who each broke a WECSSAA record (Senior Girls 100-metre hurdles and Senior Girls 200m, respectively), earned first in other events (Senior Girls long jump/high jump for Steel-Douglas, and Senior Girls 100m for Bailey), and were part of both record-breaking relay teams. The Senior Girls 4x100m relay (also featuring Lauren Luvisotto and Janelle Davis) and the Girls 4x400m relay (also featuring Davis and Julia Carswell) both set new records.
Speaking of Carswell, she also won three other first-place medals in the Novice Girls 200m, 400m, and 800m races. Other shoutouts go to Novice Boy Osman Kromah, who won the 100m and 400m and placed second in the 200m, and Junior Girl Charlotte Townsend, who was second in the 100m hurdles and long jump, third in the 300m hurdles, and helped earn bronze in the 4x100m relay.
In the field, eight gold medals were awarded, including Ryan Perrone in Junior Boys javelin and Colin Diotte in Senior Boys javelin. Both also placed third in their respective discus events.
If every athlete who medalled or qualified for SWOSSAA were listed, this would be five pages long. While not all are named here, every one is a vital part of this team. All eyes are now on the Sabres as they compete at SWOSSAA (hosted by Sandwich), then OFSAA West in London, and finally OFSAA in Toronto, beginning June 5.
Ultimate Frisbee
The Sabres ultimate frisbee team is heading to OFSAA, closing out an undefeated season with a 9–2 win over Leamington in the WECSSAA final. In this rising co-ed sport, the Sabres scored at will and forced multiple turnovers. Notable players include Ryleigh Harrison and Ashton Maluske. The team is eager to compete at OFSAA in Barrie.
Girls Slo-Pitch
The girls’ baseball team is off to a strong start with a 4–2 record and one game remaining, placing fourth out of nine county schools. Averie Blanchard and Emily Crosby have led the charge with five hits each in their last two games. Riding a two-game win streak, the Sabres have outscored opponents 34–8 heading into their final match against North Star.
Boys Baseball
The boys wrapped up their regular season with a 3–4 record. Despite many cancellations and postponements, the team succeeded, with their three wins coming by a combined score of 21–2. They face Riverside in their first playoff game at McAuliffe Park in Tecumseh.
Senior Boys Soccer
After a slow start with four straight losses, the team bounced back, winning an exhibition tournament in Tilbury, then beating St. Joseph’s 1–0 and tying a strong Massey team 2–2. They were eliminated in the first round of playoffs by Holy Names. Coach Bondy commends the team’s resilience and effort.
Senior Girls Soccer
The senior girls soccer team faced challenges throughout the season and struggled to find consistent momentum. Despite this, they showed grit and determination in several tough matches. Claire Boutros and Vivianna Merlino stood out as top goal scorers. The team is poised for a comeback with a promising roster next year.
